The Road Not Taken

“And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.”

William in a Box

Sorry for the late post today.  My head is a little foggy after a very enjoyable evening at Heron Croft farms with some great friends.  This is a photo of my nephew William being carried by my daughter, Tyya, and her cousins, Ethan and Autumn.

Lost in the Leaves

Another photo from the blackout.

Bathing on my back deck in the crisp, October air. Cattle calls in the distance crashing through the trees. Skeletal arms waving farewell to the final, fallen leaves. The radiance of my warm tea crawling up my arms, preparing them for time spent with my journal. No e-mail, no Facebook, no TV, no IPod, no phone, no buzz of the house. Reminds me how much time I choose to surround myself with noise. Phone calls, texts, e-mails, music, vibrations – there doesn’t seem to be a moment where there is no stimulation.

There should be! We need balance. We need time to reflect on our lives and consider how we are doing. We need time with no distractions. Tomorrow, I am going to ask my classes to tell me how they react to blackouts. No doubt, there will be some interesting answers. It might make some realize it is a good thing to be disconnected from time to time…on a back deck, in the crisp air, with a warm tea, writing in a journal by the setting sun.
